Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I have to take private lessons to come to semi-private lessons or mat classes?
To get the most out of your workouts you should have basic proficiency of the classical reformer routine before you join semi-privates. How long this learning takes depends on the individual; but on average between 4 -16 lessons. Many studios and gyms offer mat classes or workshops geared for beginners. If you learn the Pilates principles of concentration, centering, control, precision, breath, and flow in a mat class, then learning how to use the apparatus for a semi-private will usually take fewer lessons. - How often do I need to do a Pilates workout?
That depends on your goals. For the fastest results plan on 2-3 times a week for about 3 months, and then you can scale it back for maintenance. To keep your Pilates body it is recommended to do some Pilates every day... but there is no need to do your Pilates workout at the studio every time! The mat work can be done economically in a mat class, following a video, or from memory. - Isn't Pilates a woman's exercise?
The Pilates technique is intended for both men and women, young or old, in health or in recovery. The method is named after its inventor: Joseph Pilates, who was a boxer, athlete and a gymnast. During WWI he rehabilitated injured soldiers at an internment camp which is where he began to systemize his breathing and conditioning techniques. Pilates is an excellent way to strengthen and heal a tender or hurt back, however if you are under the care of a physician it's best to ask first. The exercises are designed to improve posture which alleviates the conditions that create back pain and stress.
